The Pioneer, Wednesday, 30 September 2015

The path-breaking visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the US and his interaction with Silicon Valley’s tech giants is yet another milestone in India’s increased stature internationally. With firm determination to push economic reforms, given the global economic crisis and adverse economic conditions, India is showing great growth potential.

Mr Modi’s announcement that the Government’s aim is to ensure ‘ease of doing business’ as it aims to convert the country’s economy from eight trillion dollars to $20 trillion, was the most welcome statement.

This being Mr Modi’s second visit to the US, it will further strengthen the bond between the two countries, which will increase bilateral economic collaboration, bring investments and firm-up security ties.

STRENGTHENING INDIA- KUWAIT TIES, (PM MODI'S VISIT TO KUWAIT)
25th December, 2025, LE

Madam —The two-day visit of PM Narendra Modi to Kuwait will further boost the bilateral ties between two historically friendly nations. This is the first visit by any Indian prime minister to the Gulf nation in 43 years. Though India and Kuwait have enjoyed traditionally friendly relations, which date back to the pre-oil era of Kuwait when maritime trade with India was the backbone of its economy, India and most Arab countries, especially Kuwait, have enjoyed very cordial relations based on mutual trust and people to-people contact, nurtured over several millennia.

Till 1961, the Indian rupee was the legal currency tender of Kuwait till it introduced its currency, the Kuwaiti Dinar (KWD). This was a symbol of enduring economic and cultural centuries between two brother nations.

PM Modi was conferred with Kuwait’s highest civilian honour, the prestigious “Order of Mubarak Al Kabeer. The Order of Mubarak Al Kabeer is a knighthood order of Kuwait. It is awarded to heads of state and foreign sovereigns and members of foreign royal families in a sign of friendship and has been previously awarded to foreign leaders like Bill Clinton, Prince Charles, George Bush, King Salman Bin Saud, and King Hussein of Jordan.

This visit of PM Modi holds great significance as current global volatility requires better cooperation and stability among nations, especially among regional players, for energy security, and India’s desire for stability in the Gulf region, beside Kuwait, holds significant strategic importance. The Kuwait Investment Authority (KIA) has the world’s oldest and fifth largest sovereign wealth fund, valued around US $1 trillion, which has US $969 billion in assets under its management.

This visit of PM Modi has heralded a new era of friendship, which will further boost trade, cooperation, and peace at a time when economic concerns and regional stability dictate are of the foremost importance in the formation of political alliances.

Gulf News, June 17, 2019, L.E.

After taking over as the prime minister of India for his second term, Narendra Modi’s visits to our immediate neighbours, the Maldives and Sri Lanka, is a welcome gesture (”In wake of attacks, leaders of India and Sri Lanka meet”, Gulf News, June 10). In view of the present volatility in these two countries, his visit is significant for India, due to their strategic location. This trip signifies the political, cultural and economic ties India has with these places.

This is a praiseworthy gesture by India in improving its relations with our immediate neighbours, as these two nations are reeling under severe Chinese debt traps. The Easter Sunday terror attack in Sri Lanka is one of the worst disasters in recent times.

Modi’s visit to the Maldives and Sri Lanka heralds a new era of bilateral cooperation between two countries at a time when economic and security concerns dictates the formations of bilateral relations, hence this visit will further act as confidence-building measure.

Gulf News, February 10, 2020,L.E.

The Government of India deserves all the praise for its alacrity in reaching out to Non-Resident Indians (NRI's) distress after the Indian Financial Budget was introduced for 2020-2021 (“Evacuation of Indians from Wuhan complete”, Gulf News, February 2). Whether it was the evacuation of Indians from Yemen in 2015, or the evacuation of Indians in Wuhan after the corona virus epidemic, the government has stepped in.

In this case of Indians stranded in Wuhan province of China, the epicentre of the epidemic virus, the government moved fast and brought back the Indian citizens safely. This is a true example of how much the Government of India cares for its countrymen in distress, and its uses all resources on its command to help them.

In all these rescue operations undertaken by the Indian government, the state-owned carrier Air India has always played a formidable role and should applauded. The Air India planes brought back the Indian citizens safely. The government has always followed the glorious record of helping out their countrymen in need, around the world. The evacuation during the Gulf War was the biggest one undertaken and they managed to bring back thousands of Indians stranded in Iraq during Iraq and Iran war. Earlier, late politician Sushma Swaraj did an excellent job in carrying out these duties. Now, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar as the Minister of External Affairs in India is carrying forward the legacy.

Sir The two-day visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visit to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia was very successful. The current global volatility requires better cooperation among nations especially among regional players. Modi’s policy of engaging the world is a laudable step especially with the GCC countries. Today Gulf region is an area of vital importance for India’s security especially energy security and economy. India and the GCC countries, especially Saudi Arabia, have enjoyed very cordial relations based on mutual trust and people-to-people contact, which dates back to several millennia.

A huge number of Indians live in the GCC region and remits billions of dollars home. During the last 10 years, we have seen Saudi-India relations reaching new heights. It started in 2006, when after 51 years, any Saudi king visited India, which led to the signing of the Delhi declaration.

It was hailed as a milestone in Saudi-India relations. Big Saudi businessmen have vast surplus funds, which they usually invest in the West. Hence, the key objective of the Modi government should be to convince prominent Saudi businessmen to make investments in India.

Sir —On Narendra Modi’s recent visit to the United Arab Emirates(U.A.E), The grand hospitality of the Arabs was evident. Modi was received at the Abu Dhabi international airport by the crown prince, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. This historical visit will not only boost India’s relations with the UAE, but will also strengthen the relationship with the Gulf Cooperation Council and the entire Arab world. The prime minister also met Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Emir of Dubai. India expects to woo the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, which controls the $800 billion sovereign wealth fund, to make investments in the growing Indian economy.

The UAE is home to 2.6 million Indians, who remit over $13 billion to India annually. The UAE is also among the largest oil-producing nations in the world. Modi’s visit has acted as a confidence-building measure, and one hopes it will help in bolstering ties between the two nations. It will also help promote stability for both countries in their respective regions.

In the 21st century, the GCC countries are looking less towards the West and more to the eastern countries for making strategic investments. They will always bank upon India, which has a stable government and a fairly independent judiciary, as a safe destination for investments.

This visit has heralded a new era of friendship; it will boost trade and cooperation at a time when economic concerns dictate the formation of political alliances.

Sir - The Indian prime minister, Narendra Modi, visited Iran recently. The visit bore evidence of the improvement in the bilateral ties of the two nations. India is home to the largest Shia population in the world after Iran. Both the countries have a major stake in the peace, stability and prosperity of the region. The nuclear deal between the P5+1 and Iran is a game changer for the latter's economy. The lifting of sanctions has allowed the gulf nation to regain its frozen assets.

The Chabahar port deal will strengthen India's trade relations with Iran, which can turn out to be a potential market for Indian exports in information technology and pharmaceutical products. Both the nations must organize student-exchange programmes in technology and medicine.

Modi's visit will boost energy ties. Iran has the fourth largest oil reserves in the world. The trilateral agreement is also of strategic importance as the Chabahar port is located near the Pakistan border. It will provide India an alternative sea route to Afghanistan and Central Asia.

Dear Sir, India’s relations with the Gulf Arab world are centuries old. And these relations have been further cemented by the inflow of expatriate labour from India to the Gulf countries with the oil boom of the ’70s in the last century. In this context, the current visit by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Qatar (Gulf Times, June 5) assumes great significance.

It heralds a new era in relations between the two countries. This visit is especially important for India’s energy security as the country gets almost two-third of its oil from the Gulf region. The Gulf states’ investment policy has recently undergone a major shift and they are increasingly looking to the East for business opportunities. Prospects in India evoke much interest among them, especially since it has a stable governmental system rooted in democratic principles, an independent judiciary and a growing middle class. There is a tremendous scope for business co-operation between governments and people of all Gulf states and India. India offers higher education facilities to Gulf youths at affordable costs. Qatar students can also benefit from information technology courses and can even get training in premier IT companies in India. Trade between the two countries is flourishing. Bilateral trade touched around Rs 15 Bn in 2014-15.

Qatar Investment authority (QIA), 100% owned by the government, has already started investing in India in some commercial real-estate projects. India can further look for more investments by QIA in the country’s mega infrastructure projects.

There are more than 630,000 Indians working in Qatar, contributing to the state’s development. The latest landmark visit by Modi will further bolster the historical and cultural ties between Qatar and India and bring the two nations still closer, helping to promote stability in a volatile region.

REGULAR INTERACTIONS ARE GOOD FOR INDIA, PAKISTAN
THE PIONEER-30 DECEMBER 2015

This refers to the editorial, “An act of a statesman” (December 28). Prime Minister Narendra Modi's surprise visit to Pakistan is not only path-breaking but is a highly significant step forward towards improving relations between the two neighbours.

The trip marks a departure from protocol-driven politics between the two neighbours who have always been in confrontation since 1947. We should remember: Although India and Pakistan are divided by boundaries, they have a common heritage, language and culture. It is unfortunate that the two countries have faced some major wars. War has only created havoc and devastation. Besides, the economy too has suffered badly. Instead of confrontation, a comprehensive dialogue should be started in which all outstanding issues get discussed. Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's gesture of welcoming Mr Modi and seeing him off at Lahore was the hallmark of this visit.

The trip has raised hopes. Frequent meetings between India and Pakistan bode well for improving ties and enhancing mutual trust.

Sir,Prime minister Modi"s historical visit to Nepal should be considered as the dawn of an New Era in particular to improving its relations with its immediate neighbour,as it is first official visit by any Indian Prime minister to Nepal after 17 long years.

It is a step forward in improving India's relations with immediate neighbors,Infact Our Country has lost ground as far as our relations are concerned with our Immediate neighboring especially with Nepal,Infact Nepal in last few decades has moved quite close to China after Chines liberal financial grant to the Himalayan kingdom of Nepal,After Independence, slowly and slowly our relations had became sour with our immediate neighbors like Sri Lanka,Nepal,Bangladesh and Myanmar etc, slowly China rushed to fill the gap and improved the relations with these small nations at the cost of India by way of liberal grants and developing infrastructural projects on the long term liberal financing basis .

Prime Minister Modi and his team should be lauded for this bold and timely step taken in regard to foreign policy initiative with its immediate neighbours, which will focus on improving India's bilateral relations with its immediate neighbours,These countries Like Nepal, Myanmar and Sri Lanka have been historically and culturally close to India since edges, Modi while addressing Nepali parliament,he has very clearly said India has no desire to interfere in Nepal Internal matters,

Also this historical visit will remove hostility between these brotherly neighbor were having for some time and prime minster Modi"s liberal announcement of grant of Nepali Ten thousand crores,Petroleum pipeline to Nepal and scholarship to Nepali students to study in India will go long way in improving further brotherly relations,

Infact this visit of Indian Prime minister Modi, something that has touched both their hearts and minds of people of Nepal, this is something that they would remember for a long time to come".
