Save the Sparrow
Khaleej Times- 25 March 2012

While civil society/conservationists are taking measures to protect large animals like tigers, elephants etc., nothing is being done to protect the beautiful sparrow that has cohabited and flourished alongside human civilisation since thousands of years. It enjoyed an enduring relation with humans and has been an integral part of our lives but now it seems that the chirping of this beautiful bird in the mornings is a thing of the past.

Main reasons for fast dwindling of this specie is rapid urbanisation and construction of tall residential towers over bungalows in big cities, which had greenery and offered shelters for sparrows. Another reason is increasing use of wireless telephony for which mobile towers are erected in every nook and corner of cities, which emits harmful electromagnetic radiations from these towers.

The studies conducted by renowned ornithologists have revealed that these low intensity radiations are harmful enough to damage the thin skull of chicks and their eggshells that affect the birth of sparrows.

Experts and sparrow lovers are of the view that if we don’t take enough measures to protect the sparrow, a day is not far when our next generation will be deprived of this friendly bird and it will remain only in the illustrated birds of extinct species. Hence keeping into view the falling population of this beautiful bird, it is imperative to include this bird in the endangered list so that enough measures can be taken to protect it.

SIR, ~ While civil society is taking measures to protect the tiger and the elephants, nothing is being done to protect the innocent and beautiful sparrow which has co-habited with humans for ages. Enduring indeed has been the relationship between man and the sparrow.

What causes concern is that one doesn’t hear the chirping every morning as one used to in the past. The legendary ornithologist, Salim Ali, might have anticipated the bleak future of sparrows when he titled his biography: Fall of Sparrow.

It is a dwindling species in the metropolitan cities primarily because of the rapid urbanization and construction of highrises. Besides, the mobile cell towers emit harmful electromagnetic radiations (EMRs).

This destroys the habitat of the birds. If we don’t take suitable measures to protect the sparrow, the next generation will be deprived of this friendly bird. It shall remain only in children’s picture-books.

SAVE THE SPARROW
DECCAN CHRONICLE 21 March 2011-L.E.

While civil society is taking measures to protect large animals like elephants and tigers, nothing is being done to protect the beautiful sparrow that has cohabited and flourished alongside humans since thousands of years and enjoyed an enduring relationship.

However, it now appears that the chirping of this beautiful bird in the morning is a thing of the past. Legendary ornithologist Salim Ali might have seen the bleak future of sparrows when he named his biography ‘Fall of sparrow’. In big cities especially the Metros, the main reason for the fast dwindling of this species is rapid urbanization and the construction of tall residential towers besides the sprouting of mobile cell towers in every nook and corner which emits harmful electromagnetic radiations.

If we don’t take quick measures to protect the sparrow, our next generation will be deprived of this friendly bird and it will remain only in picture books.
