Bridging the unseen gap
Deccan Herald. 1st jan 2000

The economy can best be served by giving more attention to the needs of rural populace, says Ramesh G Jethwani.

INDIA is poised to emerge leading global economic superpower in the early part of the next century. It has already achieved global recognition in, the most important sector of economy of next century --- information technology. Today, critical software developed at Bangalore is on par with the US. It has made significant advances in science and technology.

India's space technology Is among the top four globally. Today, our IITs are imparting technical education on par with the US. Still our education in government schools lacks direction and is very not properly managed.

Today. we have achieved self achievement in food products, but in rural India poor can’t buy enough quantity of food to meet two square meals. We have developed hi-tech hospitals, still many times rural mothers die bleeding during childbirth, due to lack of ambulance and doctors.

Today, the majority of Indians constitute rural people who are realizing the main focus of the second generation of economic reforms is towards urban areas of India is becoming urban bastions where the majority of upper middle class of about 250 million live with much better facilities compared to rural people like better electricity, water developed roads, better healthcare and school, modern communication facilities, like phones, cellular phones etc.

There is no doubt that we need to carry out economic reforms in some crucial sectors of the economy which is welcomed be sections of 'society like setting up of additional Power generation, developing modern transport and , communication facilities; modern. hospitals beside selected of financial sector for earpiece the insurance sector.

Globally India is recognized as a politically stable country irrespective of the change governments ,we have a well- balanced judiciary, world class technical institutes, excellent: English speaking technical manpower etc.

The second generation economic reforms started by Vajpayee government are supported most people but we need to have more balanced approach towards on priority basis is, We must make strategic moves to pay more attention towards social sector in a big way with better management of our salved exchequers funds like more government spending on health care, education so that the effects of economic reform reach all sections of society especially the unprivileged people in rural areas, that nobody is left out from benefit of this new prosper it result tag from economic r forms, a positive step 'inward a levitating poverty and economy lament of under-privileged people. primary education with of NRIs, NGOs and big corporate if we really want the beriberi of economic reforms to reach fifth poor and underprivileged of people especially in rural India and make accountability of teachers and education officers, besides rural students be being giver, some sort of incentive to geriatric school to reduce dropouts. Feral( literacy will be real beneficial to India, In the long run, educated women will ask their do homework, take care needs, and take tarnish r w measures'.

India is a nation on of one billion a well organist health awe system at the macro level in rural India. Today major chill the healthcare budget goes to urban hospitals especially In metro cities at the cost of rural primary healthcare services. it is an irony of the nation I it has made large advances medical science, with a put of medical graduates 1st year, recently large hi tech hospitals have been set up for advanced medical treatment on with the west; but in rural India there is still a lot to be done.

Today our urban infrastructure is already overburdened and we need to evolve efficient and we need to evolve efficient public transport to meet this growing challenge that will reduce pollution beside strict enforcement of motor vehicle act and of pollution norms.

These measures will reduce these pollution, thus pollution related diseases will reduce and saving of precious imported fuel.

Further, India needs to carry out nationwide comprehensive environmental assessment with the help of our space technology and other means to monitor environmental problems on all India basis and take corrective measures as environmental damage and deforestation causes human life very dearly in long run.
