COVID-19 cases around the world
Gulf news, January 12, 2022

The picture that is emerging of coronavirus in the world is deeply distressing (“US sets new global daily record of over 1 million COVID-19 cases”). Globally, COVID-19 cases are increasing day by day. Therefore, every country must take realistic steps, as lockdown is not the only answer; it brings distress in the life of daily wage earners due to the closing of business establishments. In view of the ground realities reflecting poverty, social backwardness and long-time closure of business establishments last year in India, it is becoming impossible to impose another total lockdown, which will prove counterproductive and will further wreck the Indian economy. In the light of these facts, people ought to accept their social responsibility by rigidly following the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP).

Also, wearing masks, maintaining adequate social distance, and handwashing should continue. Furthermore, those who have not got the second dose should get it earliest, and also, people should take the COVID-19 booster doses. Governments should expedite administering the booster dose to eligible elders and shots for children between 15-18 years.

We can see that the world bodies and government authorities are doing their best to bring down the cases, but people should also act according to the situation to ensure that there is no further spike in the number of COVID-19 cases worldwide.

(i) Strict vigil ( RISING CORONA CASES)
The Telegraph,2nd January,2022.L.E

Sir — As Covid-19 infections rise again, India must take concrete steps for its prevention. Lockdowns affect many people, especially daily-wage earners, and cannot be treated as the only solution.

The government must expedite administering both booster shots and vaccination for children. The healthcare system must take into account the needs of the poor, who are always the worst-affected.

(ii) Surging Coronavirus cases cause of great worry

Sir, The picture that is emerging of Coronavirus in the country is deeply distressing, cases are increasing day by day after it lowest 5,326 few days back, today India sees massive spike in Covid tally of 13,154.

Amid Covid rising cases in the c ountry, India must take realistic steps, as lock down is not the answer, it brings misery in the life of daily wage earners due to closing of business establishments.

In view of the ground realities reflecting poverty, social backwardness and long-time closure of business establishment last year, it is becoming rather impossible to again impose a total lockdown, which will prove a counter productive and will further wreck the economy, poorest of poor will suffer as lockdown will put livelihoods of millions of people at risk, it means no income, no food.

In the light of these facts, people ought to accept their social responsibility towards the nation by rigidly following the standard Corona procedure (SOP), must wear mask, adequate social distancing and hand washing should continue, those who have not got 2nd dose should get it earliest,

Government should expedite the administering of the booster dose to eligible elders and Corona shots for children between 15-18 years, daily administrative capacity of administering vaccines should be increased and should be done till late hours.

If the cases of coronavirus rises exponentially in India, it will put the healthcare system under strain as the poor are totally dependent on government hospitals. Though Government ha upgraded public sector health care,

It seems to be highly impossible to deal with the pandemic that rages on and on, Government should go all out to enforce these stricter measures to stop the surge otherwise we will have to and people strictly follow the standard operating procedure of corona.

While the government should have plans ready incase of an eventual massive surge of corona wave as during the sudden out-break of second Corona wave when we were caught unaware, people also must keep our guard up.

Coronavirus: Recognising the unsung heroes
Gulf News, April 09, 2020

Doctors, healthcare staff and police officers are our real frontline heroes of this coronavirus pandemic. They are leading this war against the virus and when the rest of the world is at home, protecting themselves form this pandemic, they are outside, working under adverse conditions. They are at a risk of getting infected too.

These unsung heroes work a 24-hour shift, seven days a week in hospitals and around cities trying to save the patients, who are infected with coronavirus.

Even our police force is undoubtedly paying an important role in helping keep the city safe amid the pandemic. These unsung heroes are putting up a relentless fight against this deadly disease, which has spread its wings far and wide. This virus has affected more than 180 countries. The US is currently the most adversely affected of them all. No one knows exactly when this pandemic will end. A cure or vaccine has not been created yet. The disease has affected millions of people all around the world.

These doctors, paramedics, police officers in the UAE and around the world are selflessly devoting their service for the sake of the survival of mankind. Hence, they are the real heroes during this crisis.

Surging Covi-19 cases

Sir,The picture that is emerging on Coronavirus in country is deeply distressing, cases are increasing day by day, which has once again plunged the country at the risk of this deadly Coronavirus, this second wave of pandemic, seems to be highly infectious and can wreck the already over overburdened healthcare system,

Experts agree and have been asserting daily through mass media that vaccination is the only solution to control this pandemic. Everyone above the age of 18 should be allowed to take the jab.

world wide experts agree Mass testing and vaccination will definitely address the further spread of this pandemic, another plus factor is,in 2021 corona vaccine is available, everyone above the age of 18 years should be allowed to take jab, we need to vaccinate at least 60% to 70% of its population in next three-four months by way of vaccinating atlaest everyday 50-60 lakhs people a day,for this governmnet should operate public healthcare system 24x7 least this Virus acquires an lethal virulence,India's large private sector health provider they should also cooperate with governmnet in providing 24x7 vaccination.

In view of the ground realities reflecting poverty, social backwardness and long time closure of business establishment last year, it has again become rather impossible to impose again a total lockdown, which will prove counterproductive, and will further wreck the economy, poorest of poor will suffer as lockdown will put livelihoods of millions of people at risk,it means no income,no food .

Some states like Punjab are witnessing large number of asymptotic corona cases, testing on war footing is the key to identify corona infected persons, and isolating the infected patient by home quarantining,

Governmnet must appeal to public that coronavirus is a serious public healthcare crisis, and beyond a poit public healthcare accept patients.

hence Public have to follow rigid Corona -19 Standard operating Procedure(SOP) like wearing the face mask which are most crucial to Covid management, keeping adequate social distance and washing the hands frequently to keep at bay Corona,Unfortunately, when Corona was on verge of decline ,people let own the guard down and became lenient towards SOP of Corona, they stopped wearing masks and other SOP,it should not be forgotten that this Coronavirus just needs an unprotected meeting between two people to spread, otherwise it seems to be highly impossible for us to deal with the pandemic that rages on and on. Governmnet should go all out enforce these stricter measures to stop the surge .

In the light of these facts, people ought to accept their social responsibility towards the nation by rigidly following the Corona SOP, to get themselves vaccinated at the earliest to save the precious lives from the this new pandemic which more lethal,if it did not follow standard operating procedures SOP set by government, then it seems to be highly impossible for us to deal with the pandemic that rages on and on. India lost three eminent personalities due to Corona pandemic in --2021

On May 21, the country lost three eminent personalities due to the infection arising out of the Corona pandemic, these legendary personalities had made great contributions to the nation in their respective fields and they will be remembered for generations to come. Sunderlal Bahuguna was a noted environmentalist and pioneer of the famous Chipo movement, who had been continuously warning the successive governments and the civil society about the high cost of unchecked and unplanned development in fragile mountains of Himalayas.Rajkumar Keswani was one one of the foremost investigative journalist of the country who had forewarned about the Bhopal gas tragedy months in advance and Prof Dinesh Mohan was a noted public intellectual who had greatly contributed towards road safety and urban transportation planning,

(i) Eminent Environmentalist (Sunderlal Bahuguna). On 21st may,2021,another iconic personality Sunderlal Bahuguna died of Covid-19,he was an Eminent environmentalist and pioneer of environmental movements whose demise marks the end of a glorious Era in the field of environment and conservation, for decades, he had been fighting for the preservation of forests in the Himalaya who he had become the become a public face of the Chipko movement.

He is credited for the success of the "Chipko movement" or "Chipko Andolan" a forest conservation movement that began by him in 1973 at the foothills of the Himalayas in Uttarakhand,Chipko movement had drawn big global attention, and it had also become a rallying point for the many environmental movements globally, but he will be most remembered for the collective mobilization of women.

In fact he had been continuously warning the successive governments and the civil society about the high cost of unchecked and unplanned development for the preservation of the fragile mountains of Himalayas, recent major disasters in Himalayan hills from Kedarnath floods in 2013 to Chamoli tragedy, are the reminders that Sunderlal Bahuguna warnings can't be ignored for which he had had rightly been fighting for the preservation of forests and unplanned and unchecked development

in Himalayas, these disasters are a reminder that Bahuguna’s lessons can be ignored at our own peril,

He had also carried out massive protests against the construction of Tehri Dam.

He was a Gandhian to the core, whose message will remain relevant for years to come whose contribution towards the cause of the environment will remain unparalleled, In the 70's he undertook many padayatras to mobilize the villagers which amplified the message of Chipko movement, which drew national and international attention to their cause.

He taught the Generations of activists about the connection between forests, livelihoods, and unplanned development that harmed ecological balance in Himalayan, gender inequalities, and the sheer injustice of ‘development’ that stole trees, soil and water away from villagers for the benefit of city-dwellers.

He was awarded the country's 2nd highest civilian award "Padma Vibhushan for his legendary contribution for environmental conservation, he was also awarded an Honorary degree of doctor for social science from IIT (Roorkee), he had authored several books,

Legendary environmentalist had been continuously warning the successive governments and the civil society about the high cost of unchecked and unplanned development in fragile mountains of Himalayas and the recent disasters in the region from the Kedarnath floods to the Chamoli tragedy, are the reminder that Bahuguna’s lessons can be ignored.

He was an most distinguished environmentalist, whose the the Chipko movement had become a mass movement, His lasting legacy will continue to inspire environmental and local communities to conserve Himalayan Ecosystem which is already showing the sign of detrition.

He will be best remembered as Himalayan voice for ecological truth.

(ii) Rajkumar Keswani" A fearless and committed journalist (who exposed the Bhopal gas accident).

Rajkumar Keswani was an acclaimed investigative journalist based in Bhopal, who had made a great contribution in the field of investigative journalism, he had exposed the possibilities of an impending grave industrial disaster in the Union carbide Plant at Bhopal, much before the accident took place in this plant in the intervening nights of 2-3 December 1984 .

He was known as one of the most committed investigative journalist of the era, public good was his mission in life, who will go to an extra mile in the pursuit of truth, in his series of hard hitting articles, he had forewarned about the possibility of grave industrial accident in Union carbide plant at Bhopal months before the disaster took place on the intervening nights of 2-3 December, 1984, in his articles, he had written that the plant's safety standards were inadequate, outdated and lot of important components like valves and lines were malfunctioning and were in extremely poor condition, any gas leak at the plant could be a catastrophic leading to the loss of large number of lives.

His reporting about the the safety flaws at Plant came true, we saw the world's deadliest Industrial accident in the intervening nights of 2-3 December 1984, thousand of people died due to poisonous gas leaked out of the Union Carbide plant Ltd which manufactured pesticide at this plant, Leak from this highly toxic substance enveloped the large surrounding areas around union carbide plant, about 5,00,000 were exposed to the fumes due to as leak of this highly poisonous gas, this gas had maimed generations of people nearby the plant.

Estimated 3787 people died and 5,71,478 people permanently got some incurable respiratory diseases of Lungs, these people were the sole bread winners of families, this worst industrial accident could have been averted if government had taken a note of several of Rajkumar Keswani articles(1982) in which he had fore-warned of a impending industrial accident.

Sadly neither Union carbide management nor union and state governments paid any attention towards his exposures and all preferred to look the other way,in fact a safety audit of the plant would have saved the world biggest accident and thousands of lives could have been saved.

Keswani was not only a fearless and committed journalism India ever had, but a compassionate human being, who continued to speak against the corruption involved and injustices being meted out to these victims of Bhopal Gas tragedy,

He came to this world with a mission,he was a great human being for whom welfare of fellow human beings was at core of his heart, who even 37 years after the accident, was continuously working for these people, he was their saviour.

It was his greatness, that he was always there whenever they needed him most, his mission in life was, he wanted these gas survivors to get justice, modern medical facility and fair compensation, as people who survived from Gas leak were continuously living a very miserable life, they were having respiratory lungs problems, loss of earnings and were continuously living a miserable life, due to continuous lungs problems and loss of earnings, he was a committed human being who even after exposed continuously worked for these Gas victims, but his greatness came out even more when he continuously worked endlessly for the securing justice for gas victims, he will always speak out fearlessly against injustice meted out to these gas victims

For his series of reports on the Bhopal Gas tragedy which had made headlines in national and international media, Rajkumar Keswani received the prestigious Indian B.D. Goenka Award for Excellence in Journalism in 1985.he was the youngest journalist to receive this prestigious award, He was also honoured with the Prem Bhatia Award 2010 for Outstanding Environmental Reporting, In those days, there was no internet and computers hardwares, hence for journalists to keep such big volumes of records was a big task, but Keswani came to this world with a mission, he had kept these voluminous record as admission for any court reference and for future generations, it was a most praiseworthy, his house was like a museum, he had meticulously kept the documents of the Bhopal gas incident, beside the copies of the debates in the assembly and newspapers were kept on the rack.

After the Bhopal gas leak disaster, he was interviewed on radio and television shows, as he was the only journalist who knew anything about the Union Carbide Bhopal plant before the accident and aftermath of the accident.

Rajkumar Keswani was a multifaceted personality, a committed journalist, Author, connoisseur of HIndi Music

above all a good human being whose mission in life was to serve people, he was associated with prominent newspapers like NDTV, Dainik Bhaskar, The Illustrated Weekly of India, Sunday, India Today and The Week and New York Times,His reporting of the gas scandal made him famous worldwide. He also did the Investigative Series of Gas Tragedy for the leding US newspaper "New York Times''

Rajkumar Keswani was also a great connoisseur of Music, who had a superb collection of old classical songs of old Hindi movies dated back to seven decades,he had also penned a book in Hindi, "Daastan-e-Mughal-e-Azam" this epic book was published on the 60th anniversary of the release of one of India's greatest historical movies "Mughal-e-Azam". which highlights the rare and most interesting stories behind-the-scenes of the Dilip Kumar and Madhubala-starrer of the magnificent movie "Mughal-e-Azam",It is a very good read,". one of the most celebrated movies in the annals of ema.

Even after 37 years of the industrial accident, the Bhopal gas accident is still considered among the world's most deadly and worst industrial disasters.

(iii) Dinesh Mohan (Eminent road safety Expert)

Professor Dinesh Mohan was a renowned academician, public intellectual, great humanist and honorary Professor at Indian Institute to Technology (IIT) Delhi, he was an eminent road safety and transportation engineering planner, who carried out extensive research in these subjects looking into prevailing Indian conditions during the period, when India was embarking on massive infrastructure projects especially in urban areas.

He will always be remembered for his extensive research work on urban planning, transportation, road safety and design of advanced Motorcycle Helmet incorporating all modern safety features, looking into the peveling conditions in India.

Delhi Bus rapid transport system (BRT) project was his brain child, which provided exclusive carriageway for buses on the Delhi's busy roads, though he was much criticized for BRT system, but people didn't realised that when Capital Delhi was growing exponentially, there were massive traffic jams on roads, all major arterial road use to get choked, During this period Delhi needed some respite from these traffic jams as projects like Metro rail can't be developed in few months like BRT, during that time BRT was savour for the people of Delhi, it worked very well till other modern transport system like metro came in,BRT can be developed in short period and at the friction of cast as comparing to capital- intensive Metro Rail project.

He was against the capital-intensive expensive transport projects like Metro's and Light railways system, as they are unable to meet the needs of a large number of population, due to high cost of development and high fare beside they can only run on fix route, unlike small and big Buses which can run on all rods, hence instead capital intensive projects like Metro, he wanted to strengthen Public transport system,by increasing number of Buses, and further developing BRT corridors on other routes and encouraging the public to travel in Buses.

Another Major contribution of his was,he along few of his colleagues worked towards drawing the attention of authorities and civil society for the importance of having safe Pedestrian crossings, he had also carried out extensive research in these subjects looking into prevailing indian conditions during that period, another landmark contribution of his was ,his research work on road safety and design of advanced Motorcycle Helmet incorporating all modern safety features.

Dinesh Moha had an equally illustrative brother Rakesh Mohan, who has been senior economic policy maker of India, former Executive editor of IMF, former deputy Governor of RBI who has been part of economic reforms since early 90's.

When legends like Sunderlal Bahguna, Rajkumar Keswani and Dinesh Mohan depart, the nation is always poorer, their contribution in their respective field will be remembered for generations to come.

Life and values of these legends are more relevant in present day's detrioting political system, it is unfortunate that present day, people are selfish and have immersed in their welfare rather than of society, these people all had immensely contributed for the well being of society, and have left behind an indelible mark with their distinguished work, these people have not gone but they have left a lasting legacy which will be an inspiration for us .

My soul rests in peace.

Gulf News, 27th feb, 2021, LE

It is extremely worrying and alarming that India's weekly cases of COVID-19 have been surging again in the last few days in some parts of the country, especially in Maharashtra and Kerala (“As COVID-19 cases surge in India, vaccine drive slows”, Gulf News, February 24).

These two states always have large-scale interstate movement of people from other parts of India. It is high time that citizens should cooperate with the government and follow rigid COVID-19 safety protocols or suffer yet another dreaded prolonged pandemic, which could be even worse, especially on the economic front. Schools, offices, and business establishments were closed for a long time, and daily wage earners are on the verge of collapse.

India has a large, world-class vaccine manufacturing facility for COVID-19. The government should change the current vaccination strategy and immediately start a large-scale mass vaccination programme.

The present scenario clearly shows COVID-19 is far from over; with the new mutant variant virus, continuous COVID-19 testing and strict adherence to the safety protocol should be made mandatory.

The Director General of the World Health Organisation (WHO) in his regular briefing, has declared coronavirus (COVID-19) as a global pandemic ("Coronavirus: Why are people running away from quarantine in India", Gulf News, March 16). The virus is spreading at an alarming rate, and affecting people from around the world. It has spread to more than 100 countries and has caused many deaths around the world. Respective governments have taken strong measures and are continuously taking precautions to prevent further spread of this deadly coronavirus. Even media organisations are playing their role with all seriousness.

The COVID-19 virus infects people of all ages, hence the best course of action will be to cut the transmission chain of spread of the virus. Other measures like a restriction on international travel, closing of cinema halls, schools and more, are needed restrictions. If the number of cases in India rises, it will affect the country very badly. With a large population, I hope the healthcare facilities available in the country would be able to cope with the numbers. The world should unitedly fight this menace by sharing the latest medical advancements.

The second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic has taken a massive toll on the life and health of the people. The healthcare system in the country has not collapsed, but it is high time for the authorities to realise what went wrong with the administration. Medical professionals are doing their best against all odds to serve humanity.

People are not finding beds in hospitals, fewer ambulances, medicines like Remdesivir are sold in the black market, oxygen cylinders are difficult to get unless we pay several times more than the regular price. People want to make huge profits during this tough time, and I don't understand the purpose of all this. When people are grieving due to the loss of their dear ones, profiteering during this period has gone high. The need of the hour is the Indian government should not be a mute spectator to this tragedy and take strict action against these profiteers.

The second wave of COVID-19 has taken a massive toll on the lives and people's health and has brought agony, unemployment, and hunger. It has also destroyed the prospects of children. It is a dreadful scenario the nation has ever faced in the last century. Due to the pandemic, the most affected are daily wage earners due to unemployment. In these trying times, we should go beyond the call of duty and show empathy to those who need support and help them with food packets, medicines and do whatever we can. I am over 70, and I have witnessed so many such devastating tragedies.

People have always risen to occasion and helped those less fortunate brethren who were victims. NGOs, social organisations, individual groups, religious and philanthropic institutions should rise to the occasion and immediately participate in helping the less fortunate.

Strong Preventive Measures can halt the spread of coronavirus
Khaleej times,Filed on March 14, 2020

The governments should be congratulated for taking strong measures to prevent further spread of the deadly covid-19 virus in their countries. The Director General of the World Health Organization has declared Covid-19 a global pandemic. It is spreading worldwide and has caused panic globally, spreading to 116 countries, infecting over 147,700 people and claiming more than 5,500 lives.

The Covid-19 virus infects people of all ages. Hence, the best course of action is to cut the transmission chain of spread of this deadly virus. The main carriers of coronavirus are people travelling via international flights. We need to take stringent precautionary measures at international airports and on flights. Other measures necessary right now include a ban on big gatherings, closing down of cinema halls and schools. In order to be safe, people need to wash their hands on a regular basis, and greet friends/guests without shaking hands.

If the cases of coronavirus rises exponentially in India, it could put the healthcare system under strain as the poor are totally dependent on government hospitals. India might not be able to provide a large number of isolation wards and ventilators.

Quarantine people affected by Coronvirus
Khaleej times, Filed on January 27, 2020.

Coronavirus is making headlines mostly in this part of the world and great panic is spreading the world over (Virus spread is a global emergency; KT, Jan 27). It has been eight weeks since we know of this outbreak, and more than 80 people have succumbed to the disease. More than 2,700 cases have been confirmed in mainland China. The virus is spreading fast, far and wide. The worrying bit is the absence of an antibiotic to contain this virus.

Since there is a strong movement of people among China, GCC countries, India and Pakistan, these countries should take strong preventive action. Screening of people at the entry and exit points of a country, ensuring availability in hospital and medical clinics and having good quarantine places are some of the ways to deal with this growing epidemic.

I agree with Khaleej Times editorial that this is a global medical emergency. The world should unitedly face the challenges of coronavirus rather than pressing the panic button.

Continue Taking all the preventive measures to spread Corona-19.
(Follow all safety guidelines to prevent corona pandemic till 2022).

Sir, The Unprecedented surge in fresh Corona pandemic cases in Shanghai, the sprawling metropolis of China, which is the 6th largest city of the world, and the Financial hub of China, and it contributes 3% of China's GDP, has triggered a panic across the globe, but amid strict lockdown people are confined to their homes and struggling to access their basic needs like food, healthcare.

The fresh outbreak of Coronavirus should be of great concern for the rest of the world, we should remember that when 1st corona wave was at the last stage, we all thought it is all over and we stopped taking all Corona precautions like wearing Mask, social distancing and gathering, all of sudden we saw the worst outbreak of Corona-19 in the form of 2nd corona wave, which was more fatal and we were not at prepared.

Though total Lockdown is not the answer to stop the spread of Corona-19, as with total Lockdown all business activities come to standstill, which brings misery for the poor and people at large, they are not able to meet their basic minimum requirements, though governments had provided these poor with ration and finance during the crisis which saved a lot of people from agony.

His new outbreak should be of great concern for India also as we are seeing some fresh cases of corona in the national capital, hence relaxing all the Corona protocol is not the answer, we must strictly follow the corona safety guidelines (SOP) at least till the end of 2022. people should not gather in an orderly way as it led to the spread of the Pandemic.

Furthermore all eligible people should get fully vaccinated and a 3rd dose to those who are eligible.
