With reference to Khaleej Times, June 9 news story, ‘Artist MF Hussain dies in London’, the death of India’s legendary and theworld’s most celebrated painter/artist Maqbool Fida Husain (M.F.Husain) is not only a great loss to the world of art/painting but to one and all. His death has created a big vacuum in the world of art which is hard to fill. He was a wonderful human being as well. In his life he earned both accolades as well as backlash over his art. It is said we all carry a pen in our pockets but Husain always carried a painting brush in his pocket.
He was a painter/artist par excellence as his paintings made waves across the globe but these carried some controversies as well. Even Forbes magazine honoured him with title of “Picasso of India”. The Indian prime Minister has rightly said that Husain’s death is a great loss to the nation and he will always be remembered for bringing Indian art to the world. His painting were not only on Indian civilisation but recently he had started painting the Arab civilisation as well.
By heart Husain was Indian to the core though he was in self imposed exile in Qatar due to threats from some organisations and had taken Qatar nationality. However, he always wanted to return to India and was working towards that but destiny willed otherwise and he died in London.
In recognition of his great artistic talent he was bestowed with many national awards by the government of India like the Bharat Vibhushan and Raja Ravi Varma Award and was nominated to Rajya Sabha (upper house of parliament).
The most fitting tribute to this legendary artist will be if the government of India posthumously honour him with the Bhushan Ratna award, the highest civilian award and release a postal stamp in his honour.

Sir — The news of the demise of Alyque Padamsee has saddened the nation. He was a multi-talented personality, who made rich contributions to the fields of theatre and advertisement. Padamsee was also a social activist. He created advertisements that resonated with the public.

His portrayal of M.A. Jinnah in Richard Attenborough’s Oscar-winning film, Gandhi, is a testimony to his prowess as an actor. Padamsee won the Padma Shri in the year 2000.

He was a multi-talented personality, known as advertising veteran, communication adviser, formidable theatre personality, social activist, and much more. He was arguably an institution in himself, a distinguished personality that inspired people to fight for justice and encouraged them excel in whatever they do. He was regarded as country's best known ad film maker, who achieved global fame. His creativity breathed life into several ad campaigns.

He has over 100 brands successes to his credit, but will be best remembered for his iconic ad campaigns such as Lalitaji for Surf, the Liril girl, Hamara Bajaj and the MRF muscle man.

People of my generation widely recognised him for creating iconic advertising that resonated with all. As an actor, he will be fondly remembered for playing the role of Muhmmed Ali Jinnah in Richard Attenborough's Gandhi. For 60 years of his outstanding contribution to theatre and advertisement, he was conferred with innumerable lifetime achievements awards.

With the passing away of iconic Bangalore-based artist/painter, sculptor and poet Yusuf Arakkal, an era has come to an end. He was the last of the doyens of Indian art whose work was recognized globally. Recently, we have seen the death of legends in field of Indian art like M.F. Hussain, R.K. Laxman, Ganesh Pyne, Manjit Bawa, Syed Haider Raza and now Yusuf Arakkal. Yusuf Arakkal was a multifaceted artist who created artworks across all mediums ranging from oils and watercolors to murals and sculptures. His artwork always had human angle. One of the most celebrated Indian artists, Arakkal’s artwork was exhibited not only in India, but at art exhibitions in France, London and New York. An alumni of Karnataka Chitra Kala Parishad, he was accorded due recognition in his lifetime in the arena of art. He was awarded with Raja Ravi Varma Award, Karnataka Lalit Kala Academy Award (1978, 1986), prestigious Lorenzo de Medici Gold Medal among others. He was an inspiration for young artists and always encouraged young artists. He has left behind a legacy that is hard to match and void that is hard to fill. We all hope young artists will definitely follow his footsteps. His colors will never fade. He was legend in his lifetime.

Sir — Ganesh Pyne’s death is a loss for the global art fraternity. He will be remembered as an iconic painter of modern times. Painters, critics and writers remember him best for his tempera paintings, which were rich in imagery. In his works, he created angular figures with lots of shadows through crosshatching.
Even though he lived and worked in Calcutta, his works were displayed all around the world. Pyne won many prestigious awards and accolades during his life for his phenomenal achievements.
He is an inspiration for young artists even now. It is now the responsibility of painters, art lovers, ordinary citizens and the government to ensure that good work in the tradition of Pyne continues to be produced.

Ibrahim Al Qadi, who passed away was the doyen of Indian arts and drama (“Obituary: Ibrahim Al Qadi, playwright with Saudi roots, changed history of Indian theatre”, Gulf News, August 05). Pinter, curator and archivist, he was a multi-talented person of the era. He possessed not only true knowledge of all aspects of art, but he was a legendary teacher, who had mentored and inspired a generation of Bollywood and theatre artists who went on to make a name for themselves like Naseeruddin Shah, Om Shivpuri, Om Puri, Rohini Hathgandhi, Jaydev, Suhas Joshi, Pankaj Kapoor and Surekha Sikari.

He possessed all aspects of art, and also produced some of the most notable Indian plays as produced "Tughlaq". He had the privilege of being the longest-serving director of the prestigious director of the National School of Drama (NSD). He was born in India, to a wealthy Gulf trader based in India. Ibrahim Al Qadi was bestowed with several prestigious awards for his lifetime achievements country's third highest civilian honour Padma Vibhushan in 2010, Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1962 and Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship for a lifetime for his contribution to the theatre.

He was a true architect of modern Indian theatre and a maestro. His death marks the end of an era.

Sir — A memorable era in the history of Indian comics has come to an end with the death of Pran Kumar Sharma,the creator of Chacha Chaudhary (“Brain the death of Pran Kumar Sharma, the creator of Chacha Chaudhary (“Brain behind Chacha dies”,Aug 7). Sharma, who had been suffering from colon cancer for awhile,had created several well-loved characters apart from the witty old man,Chacha Chaudhary, and his Man Friday Sabu. People will remember the inimitable Chacha,whose “brain was faster than a computer”,for years to come, The humour in the comic strip made it unique.

Pran began his career in 1960 as a cartoonist for a Delhi-based newspaper; his career spanned almost five decades. When Sharma started out, the Indian comics scene was flooded with reprints of foreign titles. Very few Indian artists sketched cartoons.Sharma created characters that people could easily relate to. The series of cartoons about Shrimatiji, Pinki, Billoo and Channi Chachi were regularly published; these characters became household names. Billoo was seen as the boy next door, and Chacha resembled the man one would bump into on the streets. Pran received the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Indian Institute of Cartoonists in 2001. In 2014, the World Encyclopedia of Comics dubbed him the “Walt Disney of India”.

Artists like Pran will be always be remembered for making readers smile. The popularity of cartoons is waning; something must be done to arrest this decline.

Dear Sir, The death of iconic Indian painter Syed Haider Raza, at the age of 94, leaves a void in the South Asian art world. Raza was touted as one of Indian modern art’s greatest painters. He was a founder-member of the Progressive Artists’ Group that wished to break with the revivalist nationalism and to encourage an Indian avant-garde engaged at the international level. Collectors and galleries valued his work highly. In 2010, Raza’s Saurashtra, a monumental canvas, was auctioned by Christie’s in London for nearly $3.5mn – a record at that time for any modern Indian artist. Raza was the last of a generation of doyens of Indian art.

The recent past has seen the death of many leading Indian artists, including M F Husain, R K Laxman, Ganesh Pyne and Manjit Baw. Raza was an institution unto himself. He will be best remembered for popularising Indian art globally.

He was bestowed with many honours and accolades at home and abroad, including the Lalit Kala Akademi fellowship (1981), Padma Shri award (1981), Padma Bhushan (2007) and Padma Vibhushan (2013). After his marriage to French artist and sculptor Janine Mongillat, he had been staying in France for many decades but Raza always kept his ties with India intact. Born in Madhya Pradesh, Raza began drawing early, at the age of 12. He studied at the Nagpur School of Art (1939-43), followed by the JJ School of Art in Mumbai (1943-1947). In 1950, he moved to Paris for higher studies and exhibited extensively in France, where he continued to live for more than six decades. He returned to India in 2010 from France and had been exhibiting regularly every year.

SIR, ~ With the passing of Ganesh Pyne, the global art fraternity has suffered a loss. The void will be difficult to fill. Amazing was his output, range of subjects and the use of colour. Well and truly, he was an iconic painter of our times. His small tempera paintings are generally regarded as phenomenally rich in terms of imagery and symbols. His works of art were strongly influenced by the great painters, pre-eminently Abanindranath Tagore, Hals Rembrandt and Paul Klee. He was based in Kolkata throughout his long career spanning five decades, but his paintings were exhibited around the world, notably in Washington, Paris and London.
Ganesh Pyne was accorded his due recognition in the global arena of art. He received many awards, including the Raja Ravi Varma award given by the Kerala government, the Shiromani Puraskar, the Artist of the Year award, the Sangeet Shyamala, the Birla Academy award for art and culture, the award by the Academy of Fine Arts and Culture, and one instituted by the Calcutta Art Society. The rich tradition that he has bequeathed must be preserved and continued. His almost unrivalled contribution will surely inspire young artists. His colours will never fade. He was a legend in his lifetime.

The demise of, Bill Eppridge, one of the greatest photojournalists of his generation and the photographer who famously captured Robert Kennedy's assassination in Los Angeles in 1968, is an irreparable loss to the world of journalism. Eppridge was a man of vision, integrity and passion.

He is remembered for numerous stories he shot for LIFE magazine -- but his most recognizable single photo is surely that of a fatally wounded Bobby Kennedy on the floor of the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles. Other iconic highlights of Eppridge career include an assignment to photograph a group of British musicians arriving in the US -- the Beatles. He also worked for high profile magazines such as Sports Illustrated and National Geographic. He remained a photojournalist till his last breath and always carried a camera with him.
