February 12, 2018-L.E.

Asma Jahangir was a staunch defender of human rights, prominent lawyer and pro-democracy activist. Her death is an incalculable loss to the Pakistani society.

Jahangir was an iron lady in her own right. She was brave, fearless, one who stood against the odds, for the rights of the less privileged, democratic values and rule of constitution at various times. And she was highly respected in Pakistan and globally for her stand against extremist groups.

Her life story is an inspiration. She was the president of Pakistan's Supreme Court Bar Association and chairwoman of Human Rights Commission. Her most notable case was about missing persons, for which she did not charge any fees from the affected families. Principles, not money, guided Asma Jahangir. She stood up for people that are hardly cared for. She chose legal profession to offer help to those who needed quality legal assistance, and many a time didn't charge needy and deserving clients.

She was an iconic person, one who would be remembered fondly for her willingness and steely determination to defend the vulnerable.

Cho Ramaswamy, had predicted Narendra Modi as future Prime Minister of India even before BJP had openly declared his name as Prime Ministerial candidate for 2014 general elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had very high regards for Cho and had even visited him when he was not well.

Cho Ramaswamy lived his life to its fullest, he in his life achieved amazing success and excelled in everything he did, very few people in their life have succeeded in so many different roles like him, He was an exceptional personality,

With his demise, an Era has ended, and world of political journalism is much poorer, it is hoped when Cho Ramaswamy is not around, his legendary Tamil magazine "Thuglak" will continue his legacy in journalism more intensely.

The worsening security scenario in Kashmir valley due to terrorist violence has not even left journalists immune to its consequences. The brutal killing of veteran journalist Shujaat Bukhari, editor of Rising Kashmir, is deeply shocking. It was all the more saddening that he was killed during the holy month of Ramadan when he was leaving for after whole day's fast. Media persons' ability to work in an environment free from intimidation has to be ensured; otherwise even the brave-hearted scribes may not venture into reporting. He was a fearless journalist, man of conviction and an institution in himself.

He had mentored many journalists, and will continue to inspire more.

The tragedy illustrates that those who are moderate face the risk of being killed. Bukhari was a neutral in reporting and had been championing peace in valley for last three decades. He believed in peace, in striking a balance.

His killing is an act of cowardliness, and nothing will justify the act. Perpetrators of this heinous crime must not go unpunished.

Nation is poorer as a legendary man like Shujaat Bukhari fades out of scene. May his soul rest in peace.

So many of people used to wait for Kamal Khan stories, which were filled with poetic voice overs, his genteel news reporting, which delivered several hard truths in a poetic way, many times he would quote from religious scriptures like Ramayana, Bhagavad Gita and Holy Quran which further gave sanity to his TV reporting.

He was also one of the finest political journalists of the country who had correctly reported about the outcome of 2017 UP assembly elections and about 2019 Lok Sabha elections that the BJP will do very well.

Kamal Khan was recipient of the Ramnath Goenka Award and the Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi Award given to the renowned journalists by the President of India,

Kamal Khan has left behind a legacy of excellence in journalism and a glorious chapter of journalism comes to an end, His impeccable integrity and journalistic ethics should be a benchmark in today's times for journalism.

His loss is irreparable. His impeccable bintegrity and ethics should be a benchmark in today's industry. We all pray to God that his family and readers gather strength to overcome this.

While his family, friends and NDTV would have been totally filled with grief, they must have taken comfort from the fact that Kamal khan was so well loved and respected by all those who knew him.

Goodbye Kamal saheb, We will miss you as will countless others.

From God we come and to God we return.

Rest in Peace (RIP) Kamal Khan.

The brutal murder of Indian journalist Rajdeo Ranjan is condemnable. It should be seen as an attack on freedom of expression. The state authorities should take immediate action against the perpetrators of this crime and to ensure the safety of journalists and social activists who are working vigorously against unscrupulous elements.

If the government does not ensure safety of journalists, people will think twice before joining this noble profession, which aims at helping create a fair and just system and exposes anti-social and anti-national elements.

It is in the larger interest of the Bihar state government led by Nitish Kumar, who is known for his good administrative skills, to order a probe into this case under the CBI.

The news about the death of the award-winning photojournalist Danish Siddiqui is indeed sad and shocking (“Look: A pick of finest pictures taken by Indian photographer Danish Siddiqui killed in Afghan crossfire”, Gulf News, July 16).

Siddiqui was known for his compassionate photographic coverage of political and social issues, especially in South Asia. His heart-wrenching images of human suffering of wars and riots had won him global accolades. He was part of Reuters, an international news organisation and won the prestigious 2018 Pulitzer Prize for documenting the photography images of the Rohingya refugee crisis who were fleeing Myanmar.

He was an outstanding and fearless photojournalist. He deeply cared about the issues confronting human beings during the crisis. He was known for the coverage of the stories of those whose lives were disrupted and required global attention. He often travelled to difficult places even at the risk of his life and finally laid down his life on the line of duty. He always strived hard to capture photographs from the conflict and crisis zones.

He always believed images should be such "they should speak the whole story without being loud," and his brilliantly captured work of pictures brought critically important stories to our eyes.

I salute his commitment and hope his family finds strength for the loss.

In those moments of crisis, he will always fearlessly represent human lives in as ethical a manner as possible, he was an extremely sensitive person who in his photograph, will never compromise on the dignity of those within his frames.

Most notable works of the legendary photojournalist was, when corona pandemic started, he travelled to large parts of India bth Urban and rural parts, to chronicle the unfolding of this tragedy, second wave of Corona which was more devastating, his heart wrenching picture of the crematorium and burial grounds, where mass cremation was taking place had earned him widespread acknowledgment for his work globally,

Sir — This refers to the editorial, "Justice to Lankesh" (September 8). The gruesome killing of eminent journalist and social activist Gauri Lankesh is matter of grave concern. The tragedy illustrates that those who fight for social issues and against corruption, run the risk of being killed.

Daughter of eminent journalist, P Lankesh, Gauri had an option to take a cushy job in mainstream media and live a comfortable life, but she chose to work for a cause she felt was right. The Special Investigation Team, under Inspector general BK Singh, supported by Bengaluru Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) MN Anucheth, hopefully will bring the truth out.

This murder is a great setback to the progressive movement, not only in Karnataka but in the country at large. We hope that her inspiring legacy will help us inspire budding journalists.

The tragedy illustrates that those who fight for social issues and against corruption run the risk of being killed.

Daughter of an eminent journalist in the 80s, she had the option to take up a cushy job in mainstream media, but she chose to work for a cause she felt was right. Exemplary punishment should be awarded to the killers.

Her death is a great setback not only to the progressive movement in Karnataka, but also the entire country. Her legacy should inspire young journalists.

Sir — This refers to the editorial, “Justice to lankesh” (September 8).

Sir — I congratulate The Pioneer's special correspondent J Gopikrishnan for bagging the Ramnath GoenkaJournalist of the Year Award for his articles that exposed the huge 2G Spectrum scam.

Last year he had won the CNN-IBN special achievement award for his articles on the subject. But he would not have been perhaps this successful without the support of his editor Chandan Mitra. The award will encourage journalists who believe in the values of truth and ethics to also perform well, without regard for the pulls and pressures that such journalists are often subjected to from vested interests.

Galizia had led the Panama Papers investigation into corruption in Malta. Her blog posts often attracted more readers than the combined circulation of the country's newspapers. edia personnel who venture into crime reporting, financial or otherwise, must be provided with adequate security.

Media is being terrorised in Pakistan

The worsening security scenario in Pakistan due to terrorist violence which has engulfed the country for last few years has not even left the media immune to its consequences. Journalists are now beginning to feel the heat of violence engineered by both state and non-state actors while performing their duty. And this grim situation is likely to get worse in the near future. The murder of a prominent Pakistani journalist, Saleem Shahzad, who was the Pakistan bureau chief of Asia Times Online, should be condemned by one and all. His reporting mostly focussed on terrorist groups, including Al Qaeda. Some days ago he had expressed the fear of being killed after the ISI threatened him for his outspoken reportage on terrorism and security related issues that left the Pakistani establishment fuming.

Neither the Pakistani establishment nor that country's radicalised society wishes to be told the truth by unbiased journalists. Therefore, the few journalists who are still willing to stick tell the truth are being attacked. This is likely to get worse with each passing day. Ironically, they face a threat from the terrorist organisations as well as the establishment, especially sections of it like the ISI. What has happened with Shahzad is actually a message for his colleagues.

The international community cannot stand by and continue to ignore what is happening in Pakistan. The world must put pressure on the Government of Pakistan to crack down on those elements in the establishment who are making common cause with the terrorists and are emulating their ways and means to terrorise both society and individuals. It is unfortunate that not even a single arrest has been made after Shahzad's murder. It remains to be seen how the authorities deal with this crime.

But irrespective of what they do, the Pakistani media must not surrender its liberty to those who preach and practice violence. Journalists who still believe in freedom of the Press must continue to report fearlessly and put the Government in the dock for its failures.

Killing of Journalists
Arab News-13 June 2011,L.E.

The brutal killing of veteran investigative journalist Jyotimroy Dey in broad daylight in India's financial capital of Mumbai is deeply shocking and should cause grave concern. It is a great loss to the nation as whole as he was as one of the finest crime reporters in our country and extensively exposed fearlessly the murky world of crimes. Dey's death proves that Mumbai is still in the strangle hold of a mafia that can strike at will.

The government must give this issue the seriousness it deserves and work toward making the atmosphere safe for journalists to work without fearing for their lives.

Media persons' ability to work in an environment free from intimidation has to be ensured. Otherwise even the brave-hearted scribes may not venture into crime reporting.

Perpetrators of this crime must not go unpunished. The Mumbai police which have earned many laurels in solving sensitive crimes should put all their energies for bringing not only the foot soldiers who carried out this diabolic murder but also those behind this heinous crime to justice.

Tribute to a fearless journalist (Anthony Shadid)
Arab News-21st Feb 2012-LE

This is my tribute to the fraternity of journalists who work under all odds and in most hostile atmosphere to keep their readers informed about latest happenings in the world. In the morning when we read newspapers we get to know events unfolding across the globe, but little do we realize how much trouble journalists take to bring to us the news from across the world. These people go to war zones leaving their families behind. I agree with Abdel Aziz Aluwaisheg when he says Anthony Shadid was a beautiful soul. "Anthony Shadid, war reporter and beautiful soul passes away." (Feb. 19)

The sudden death of the New York Times correspondent is indeed sad and shocking. He strove hard to capture stories from the Middle East. His dispatches from Baghdad under "shock and awe" bombing and from Libya wracked by civil war were examples of outstanding journalism. Shadid won Pulitzer Award twice in 2004 and 2010. Though he didn't die of any war injury but a natural death, his passing away has definitely left a vacuum.

He was in Syria reporting on the regime's repression on its own people when he died of asthma. While conferring the award for his reporting on Iraq, Pulitzer Board praised his extra ability to capture at his personnel risk the voices and emotions of Iraqi people enveloped in civil war when Iraq was invaded and the leadership was toppled leading to civil strife.

Shadid was known for coverage of stories of those whose lives were disrupted by war in the Middle East. He had worked for The Washington Post, the Boston Globe, The Associated Press, etc. He was one of the best war correspondents of our time. His death is a great loss to journalism.

It is appalling that the escalating violence in the neighboring country has been taking a toll on media persons besides the common man (ISI behind journo death?, June 1).

The brutal murder of prominent journalist and bureau chief of Asia Times Online, Syed Saleem Shahzad, should be condemned by the international community which should demand an apology from Pakistan for the incident.

It is now clear that the ISI, which literally dictates terms in that nation, is engaged in a covert effort to silence all voices being raised against the state and its authoritarian moves. It is indeed a shame to call Pakistan a democracy.

Sir,Series of coordinated terror attacks in Kabul claimed 42 lives, including those of 9 journalists,This shows the journalists and media personel face in the region, the reputed AFP photographer Shah Marai was among the casualities,

The relentless attack on media underscores the struggle Afghan Security forces faces to rein the militant groups since the US and NATO troops concluded their mission in 2014,

Journalists should be allowed to do their duty but even in these circumtances ,they continue to try.
