Dr F C Kohli "Father of India's IT revolution"

Sir,Dr Fakir Chand Kohli who passed away recently was the Founder CEO of Tata Consultancy Service (TCS),which is considered among top Information Technologies(IT) companies in the world,It is the second largest Indian company by market capitalisation .

Today he is considered as the Architect of modern India's Information Technology (I.T) industry,he was a visionary leader who was able to see years ahead the opportunity for India in this sector and started buildings Tata Consultancy Service (TCS) many decades back, when almost nothing existed in india in I.T sector except, India had international standard premier autonomous public Technical and research educational institutes like IISc/IITs/NITs, which enriched India's human resources in technology sector,Aluminis of these institutes had already started making names for themselves globally and for the India.

Dr Fakeer Chand Kohli was a visionary leader who very early foresaw that India with such great technological institutes like IISc,IIT's and NIT's, "Information Technology''(IT) services can be an industry in which India could build a core national strength.”

He was a leader extraordinary ,whose strength was that he could "sift jewels from the sand" example is, when he could see years ahead about the IT revolution which has played an important role in economic growth,as CEO of TCS, his Iconic leadership and passion over the decades played a key role in helped India in establishing a trusted IT (IT-ITeS) service provider to large global companies, which provide India in adoption modern technology and greater research in academic institutes and starting new courses in computer science in these country's premier technical institutes like IIT's/IISc/NIT's.

In spite of high position he held as CEO of TCS,he will treat everyone with respect and compassion and never belittled or offended anyone,

Dr Kohli worked with Dr. Purushottam Kashinath Kelakar who is still best remembered for being the founding director of the Indian Institute of Technology(IIT) Kanpur, established in 1959,they helped in in developing IIT's and starting new courses so that I.I.T's can match with any top global Institutes of higher education, their efforts led to IIT Kanpur starting India's first M.Tech programme in computer science,Indeed this was a great achievement for India, their primary objective was to establish an institution in India devoted to the pursuit of academic excellence of international standard.

To bring out the best from the teaching faculty of these premier technological institutes of India (IIT's/IISc/NIT's) , Dr Kohli will even encourage the teachers/professors from these institutes of higher learning to upgrade their talent by participating in international conferences or going for higher education like M.Tech /PhD to upgrading their talent/qualification further in top American institutes/West,

Also Dr Kohli firmly believed that multiple language competencies for the Indian IT industry would be a game changer in the future for the IT industry in India .

He strongly advocated, India needed bright young people with good education especially with technical education in computer science — something which India had in abundance like “it has such extraordinary educational institutes of International standard, like IIT's/IISc/NIT's/IIM's,

He believed with all these accomplishment, India has no business being a nation of so many poor people,” h ence we have to do lot more, he was deeply pained at the poverty level in India,h e was of the firm opinion that the with the combined technological power of India and education,India as nation can do a lot more,I t could further eradicate poverty and further enrich India’s enormous human resource, hence he piloted a big campaign for education of school dropouts, removal of illiteracy, adult education,

He was a true legend, who laid the foundation for India's spectacular Information technological(IT) revolution, then Ramadorai (TCS), Narain Murthy(Infosys), Azim Premji(Wipro) ,Shiv Nadar (HCL), Nandan Nilekeni(INFOSYS), S Gopalkrishna (Infosys),N S Raghavan(Infosys) and S D Shibulal(infosys),N Chandrasekaran (TCS), who all took forward I T revolution further and set the stage for Modern Indian economy we enjoy today.TCS is third largest IT service company in the world, which is considered jewel among the Tata Group, and contribute 70 % to the Tata group's revenue.

Dr Fakeer Chand Kohli, who was the founder and first CEO of TCS,was widely called as the father of Software industry who pioneered India's Technology revolution and helped Nation build 100 billion dollars Information Technology(IT) Industry, today Indian IT-ITeS sector makes huge contribution to the country's GDP, and Indian I.T contributes to almost half of global IT-ITeS outsourcing market,he was pioneer of India's IT revolution who laid the foundation of country's mammoth IT-ITeS service Industry which is touching the total revenues of about 191 billions dollars in FY20,out of which domestic revenue is US 44 Billions dollars and export revenue is 147 billion dollars in FY20 which employs millions.

Dr F C Kohli also headed the Nasscom and was president and chairman of Indian I.T services advocacy body NASSCOM ( 1995-1996), as a part of the body's executive committee, he helped to shape global partnerships and showcase opportunities to deliver IT services from India to large global companies successfully, In paying tribute to Dr F C Kohli, they said,he will always be remembered for his pioneer contribution and remarkable leadership at Nasscom.

Dr Kohli was a visionary leader, interest of nation was at the core of his heart,he will believed, that it will be shame for India, if experienced Indian I.T software professionals do cutting-edge technological work only for global multinational companies, hence he used to depute at least 20% of experienced workforce of TCS for domestic projects in spite of knowing that Indian projects will fetch less than 10% of revenue for TCS as comparing to US Projects.

Dr F C Kohli was a true nationalist, a keen follower of technology trends in China, hence he was deeply concerned about India's failure to develop its hardware industry, which stood in sharp contrast to the shining success of its software industry(IT-ITeS) ,he was a very strong advocate for setting up the hardware industry in India for the manufacture of Semiconductor plants, Computer Hardware Industry etc that will save precious foreign exchange spent in importing hardware,

Another important reason being, indigenous hardware Industry in India was not developed because Indian I.T companies were generating handsome revenues by doing IT-ITeS projects in the USA/West,hence not much attention was given towards developing indigenous I.T hardware industry, today China is much much ahead of India in I.T Hardware.

Dr F C Kohli was always worried about widening gap between India and China in hardware Industry,India's hardware imports stands 60 Billions US dollars and out of this Semiconductors imports alone is 20 billions US Dollars, today when we are moving towards digital economy in big way and it is Hardware which is the backbone of the Digital economy, if we had paid attention of Dr Kohi concerns about developing Indigenous Hardware Industry,at least this Import of hardware imports could have been cut to less than half.

T ill very end of his life,he remained simple, in many of his conversations with his friends and colleagues, he would lament and used to say ,he has some regrets left in his life,he believed even with the phenomenal growth of Information Technology(IT) sector in India, India as nation can do a lot more, biggest beneficiary of I.T is only the Indian Industry which has been enormously benefited with modern I.T services, which they have got at the friction of cost as comparing to US,but Indian nation as whole has not much benefitted ,

Dr Kohli was also deeply pained at the poverty level in India, he was of the firm opinion that with the combined power of technology and education with international acclaimed Education in Institute,India as nation can do a lot more, It could eradicate poverty and further enrich India’s enormous human resource.hence he piloted a big campaign for education of school dropouts removal of illiteracy, adult education, hence he piloted a big campaign for education of school dropouts, removal of illiteracy, adult education

With all these accomplishment, India has no business being a nation of so many poor people,” h ence we have to do lot more, he was deeply pained at the poverty level in India,h e was of the firm opinion that the with the combined technological power of India and education,India as nation can do a lot more .

He strongly advocated, India needed bright young people with good education, something country already has in abundance as “India has such extraordinary educational institutes of International standard, like IIT's/IISc/NIT's/IIM's,then India has no business being a nation of so many poor people,” h ence we have to do lot more, and he was deeply pained at the poverty level in India.

Dr Fakir Chand Kohli had a postgraduate degree MS in Electrical Engineering from the world renowned Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1950.

Present Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran who once headed TCS called Kohli as a "true legend" who laid the foundation of what has been a "spectacular IT revolution" and set the stage for a dynamic modern economy that we are enjoying today.

Dr Kohli with all these accomplishments, name and fame, he still remained grounded, his simplicity and thoughtfulness is a lesson for all us,he had risen above accolades and recognitions despite his several notable achievements;of numerous awards and Honours for his exceptional contribution to the Indian software industry , those include,Padma Bhushan India's third-highest civilian honour for his contribution to the Indian software industry , international recognitions and Honorary doctorate from and citations,

India will always remember Dr F C kohli in the same league as other legends like JRD Tata, APJ Abdul Kalam,Verghese Kurien, MS Swaminathan,E Sreedharan and Mother Teresa, who all contributed to nation building with their legendary work in different fields.

Today when too much commercialisation is taking place in all spheres of our life, one rarely gets such genuinely caring leaders and lifelong mentors like Dr F C Kohali .In spite of the high positions he held,he was always gracious, grounded and who was willing to help others .

”Dr F C Kohli was a true nationalist and karma Yogi ”,he was a person of enormous character, integrity and principle, These kinds of people are rare in public life in India, for them welfare of India was at the core of their heart, hence Post-retirement,Dr F C Kohli took upon himself to use technology for an iconic work on adult literacy as national mission, which could have made nation fully literate in 15 to 20 years,if only successive governments had taken this work forward whole heartedly,If India had few more such people like F C Kohli ,to day India would have been fully developed nation few decades ago only.

”Dr F C Kohli leaves behind the enduring legacy of an Icon, who laid the foundation for India's spectacular I.T Revolution ,today India's I.T industry has given job opportunity to millions of people and generates large revenue to national exchequer, he used to say India has everything which can make Indian a global Economic power .His commitment ,hard work and foresight shall continue to inspire the nation for generations to come.

RIP Dr Kohli Saheb.

Shri Patni "Doyen of the Indian information technology (IT)

Shri Narendra Kumar Patni,Co founder of Patni Computers(PCS),who passed away recently, will be best remembered as the,Pioneer of India’s information technology (IT) services revolution,he was one of first in India to enter I.T sector, which has grown into a multi billion dollars one,he inspired a whole new generation of young entrepreneurs to plunge into information technology (I.T) software services business. Shri Patni was a true visionary leader, who was not only a pioneer of the I.T sector, but also one of the finest persons.

It is really unfortunate and saddening that one of the fathers of the Indian IT sector is no more with us, he was a strong entrepreneur, friendly person who always used to encourage his employees.

Shri Narendra Kumar Patni "doyen of the Indian information technology (I.T)".
Shri Narendra Kumar Patni was a doyen of the indian information technology (I.T) industry in the true sense" with great entrepreneur spirit, and a human being par excellence, during the period, when Information Technology(I.T) sector in India, started growing rapidly,Country"s media was always full of stories about Indian I.T sector, though Shri Patni's name was not found on top pages on any newspapers or TV,but in the annals of history his name will always be revered by the Indian information technology(IT) sector as the Pioneer I.T technology entrepreneur.

He had the grand vision, foresight, guts and the entrepreneurship spirit to build a new generation of a industry, information technology (I.T), but the biggest impact of growth of I.T is.it has created millions of well paying jobs not only in India but globally and has greatly helped Indian economy.

Up to early 90's in India, entrepreneur activities were predominantly centered around agriculture, and agri related businesses and manufacturing to some extent, but Shri Patni heralded a new era in the information technology (IT) revolution in the country, which is a the sunrise industry today,it is employing millions of young engineers, exports billions of dollars I.T services.

Even lot of entrepreneurs in US and India owe their success to Shri Patni.

Shri Narendra Kumar Patni.
He passed out his Engineering degree from University of Roorkee(presently known as the Indian Institutes of Technology(IIT),Roorkee) in Electrical Engineering in 1964,further he obtained Masters in Electrical Engineering Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.(1966), and SM from the Sloan School of Management (1969).

Shri Narendra Kumar Patni and his brothers Ashok and Gajendra, were co promoters of PCS,they were always simple down to earth people, unlike other business tycoons, once their business flourishes, they will start leading an extravagant life, buy big flashy cars, and live in most expensive apartment,Mr Jay Forester who was his professor at MIT, said about Shri Patni that he was a excellent student, with good judgement, and man of a very high integrity ,

Patni computers (PCS)
He,co-founded Patni computers (PCS),along his brothers Ashok and Gajendra,Patni in 1978,They were the true pioneers of the offshoring of I.T from India,The trio brought I.T back office work in India in their Pune center. He had the privilege of having Shri Narayana Murthy, executive chairman Infosys,Shri Gopalakrishnan executive vice-chairman,Infosys;and Shri Nandan Nilekani, former chairman of the Unique Identification Authority of India,of being part of his team.Eventually,

Shri Narayan Murthy,Shri Nilekani,Shri S.Gopalakrishnan and other colleagues from Patni(PCS) went on to set up Infosys, which is the second-largest Indian IT services provider today.

Though Shri Narendra Patni and his brothers did't attended the same success as other late starters in Information Technology(I.T) sector, like Infosys Pomotors, but it said, business is as much about chance,

Tributes
On the demise of Shri Patni,Infosys chairman Narayana Murthy said,I worked in PCS under Naren, where i was the head of software at PCS,He was a brilliant leader, who brought out the best in all of us, His death is a big loss to all of us, he was the widely credited with being the driving force behind the growth of the Indian Information Technology(I.T) sector,

Shri Deshpande "Desh",brother in law of Shri Narayan Murthy, said,Shri Patni was a great entrepreneur who was ahead of times, and did things before we did.

Mr Jay Forester who was his professor at MIT, said about Shri Patni that he was a excellent student, with good judgement, and man of a very high integrity .

He was called affectionately "Naren" by his associates and friends,he had a great ability to carry his people with him, some of his senior employee stayed with him for long, some even for more than two decades,it is no less achievements , specially in IT sector,in true sense he was a compassionate human being who genuinely cared abut his employees,

Sale of PCS
Shri Patni was very sad till end of his life, that due to differences among family members, brothers,in 2011, he had to sell his NASDAQ listed I.T company PCS to a much smaller I.T company,i Gate,as he had built the PCS into a large company from scratch, and he very painstakingly nurtured it,PCS was India’s sixth-largest software exporter, for $1.2 billion,in 2002 General Atlantic was drafted as an Investor in PCS and finally he had to exist from the firm.

"This acquisition of PCS by a much smaller company i Gate ,left him deeply saddened and hurt,he felt immense regret, and slowly withdrew from an active corporate life and remained to himself, Then he took interest in classical Indian music,he even started attending musical concerts.

Legacy of Shri Patni,
Shri Narendra Patni's death marks an end of an era of a pioneering leadership, though he has left us for eternity, but he leaves behind a great legacy, which has made such an profound impact, that in annals of history,he will be remembered for generations to come for bringing I.T revolution in India.

Governmnet of India should honour Shri Narendra Patni,a great visionary, true Karm yogi, and a great son of India, with country's 2nd highest civilian honour Padma Vibhushan as he was in a true sense "the Pioneer of I.T revolution in India".

RIP Shri Patni ji.

Arab news-LE-13th Sep 201l L.E.

Prof. Sir Robert Edwards who passed away this week will always be remembered worldwide for his pioneering work on in vitro fertilization (IVF) technique, which helped couples with fertility problems to have a baby. His groundbreaking research of IVF technique gave birth to Louise Brown — the world’s first test tube baby — in 1978.For all those couples who had lost all hopes to start a family, Prof Edward’s path-breaking and painstaking research along with his colleague Patrick Steptoe, brought happiness and joy to millions of families all over the world. Today IVF treatment is used worldwide and has successfully resulted in more than five million babies.
Prof. Edwards won the Nobel Prize for physiology or medicine in 2010. A year later, he was knighted for “services to human reproductive biology.” Prof. Edwards always was motivated by his belief, which he once described it, “the most important thing in life is having a child.”
Mankind will always remember this visionary scientist. His death is a great loss to all of us. We all hope that his legacy will live on with all the IVF work being carried out throughout the world and which will be further improved.

Only a small section of the Indian media has recognized the contribution made by legendary Indian scientist SIN Bose regarding discovery of God particle. This discovery is considered revolutionary in human history and a victory regarding fundamental knowledge of the universe.

Today, the world is celebrating this ‘discovery at CERN at Geneva, but the contribution of Bose is not getting its due. This, even as no scientist denies his contribution towards developing modern physics. In fact, there is consensus among modern physicists that much of the work they do is derived from Bose's stellar achievement.

In a true sense, no national international award is greater than recognition by one's peers.

AMAR BOSE
The Statesman-18 July 2013-LE

SIR, The death of Dr Amar Bose, the pioneer of acoustics and chairman of the audio-tech company, Bose Corporation, USA, is an irreparable loss. To him we owe the high-quality audio system speakers for the home, the auditorium, and the cars that bear his name. He had a sharp intellect and was known for his humility. The world has lost a great leader in the field of technology.

Dr Bose had founded Bose Corp almost 50 years back with a set of guiding principles centred around his research and innovations at MIT. Though he was a successful and innovative businessman, his first love was research and teaching. He was on the faculty of MIT.

He was relentlessly focused on acoustic innovation. Though his audio system was expensive, he earned great reputation for the high quality audio system. In 1968, he developed the “Bose 901 direct /reflecting speaker system”, which became the best-seller in the market for more than 25 years. His other inventions included the “Bose wave radio” and the headphones used by frequent fliers. The equipment could reduce the noise level and was adopted by the US military and commercial pilots. He won several awards and was a Fulbright post-doctoral scholar.

Amar Bose’s father was a freedom-fighter who left India for the USA to escape persecution and imprisonment by the British. He leaves behind a profound stamp on technology. He has shown the world how research in technology and science can help us to listen.
