Bihar prohibition: Costly and impractical
Deccan Herald 2 December 2015-L.E.

Sir, Apropos the editorial "Bihar must review liquor ban" (DH, Nov 1). Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's decision to impose a liquor ban in the state will not be successful in the long run. Illicit liquor will flourish and will lead to bootlegging on a massive scale. Police department ,which has been doing good work under Nitish, will have to divert is attention towards enforcing, executing and monitoring the liquor ban, by limiting the efficiency of the law and order wing.

Similar instances of failed prohibitions in Bihar, Andhra Pradesh and Haryana must serve as examples. While illicit liquor was being supplied in the market, the government a fared massive revenues loss. For Bihar, which recorded an excise revenue of Rs 3,650 crores in the year 201445, the money can help supplement many popular schemes for the poor and marginalized sections. A rethink on the ban is vital.
