Drug Menace
The Pioneer, january 18th, 2024, letters to Editor.

Sir — The pervasive menace of drugs in society disproportionately affects the younger generation, ensnaring the youth in its perilous grip. The ease of access to drugs exacerbates the crisis, making it a formidable threat to the very fabric of our communities.

Drug addiction, a relentless force, stands as one of the most potent destroyers of societies known to humanity, leaving a trail of shattered lives in its wake.

Unlike combating other societal challenges, addressing the drug menace requires a multifaceted and coordinated approach. While enhanced security measures and intelligence networks can combat terrorism, wealth creation tackles poverty, and well-equipped military safeguards against external threats, eradicating drug abuse necessitates the concerted efforts of law enforcement agencies, including the Police, NCB, DRI, and other central bodies. NGOs and educational institutions, in collaboration with parents, must actively engage in preventive measures and awareness campaigns. Crucially, governmental intervention is imperative.

Counselling programs targeting the youth should be instituted, emphasizing the detrimental consequences of drug abuse. The establishment of more rehabilitation centers is crucial, providing a haven for addicts to undergo comprehensive treatment and recovery.

In the face of this insidious challenge, a united front comprising law enforcement, educational institutions, parents, and government initiatives is indispensable to safeguard the invaluable asset that is the youth and preserve the well-being of our society.

SIR, ~ Apropos the report, “Major drug racket busted in Punjab”, the confiscation of drugs valued at Rs 130 crore on the international market is suggestive of the extent of the menace in this country. Recently, a senior Army officer in Manipur was arrested while transporting a large consignment of drugs.

The law enforcement agencies have largely been ineffective, and drug pedlars are operating with impunity. To counter the problem of narcotics, close cooperation between the government, the NGOs and civil society is imperative. There should be more rehabilitation centres to which addicts can be sent.

The dedicated entity called the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) must be strengthened.

It ought to be manned by a band of committed officers, drawn from the Customs and the police.

Drug Bust, (Drug Haul in Bangalore)
The Pioneer,4th Dec,2019,L.E.

Sir — The Central Crime Branch wing of the Bengaluru city police must be lauded for busting an international drug racket and seizing contraband worth over 1 crore. The force exposed the drug mafia on the basis of a tip-off from the parent of an addict. The operators used the dark web to smuggle narcotics from Canada by using Amazon’s courier services.

This incident should act as an eye-opener. A large number of the youth in Bengaluru are prone to drug abuse. Young professionals with disposable incomes often become the prime targets of drug peddlers. Drug addiction is currently one of the most serious ills plaguing our society. Its effects are devastating and can destroy lives. It is time to address this issue seriously.

Unless the Narcotics Control Bureau, along with other agencies, cracks down on smugglers and peddlers across the country and brings to justice the kingpins who hide beyond the borders, it will be difficult to effectively tackle the problem of substance abuse.

Drug addiction is probably the most powerful destroyer of societies known to man,Drug abuse has devoured young lives.Youths are assets to nation,

it is possible to fight terrorism with better security mechanism and intelligence network,It is possible to fight poverty by creating wealth ,it is possible to arm a nation if it has the means to buy weapons and protect itself from invaders

but to fight drug menace we require larger coordinated approach of Police, N.G.O's and education institutes. The governmnet should also counsel youngsters,There should be more rehabilitation centers to which addicts can be sent.

The law enforcement agencies have largely been ineffective and drug peddlers are operating with impunity especially in education institutes. To counter the problem of narcotics, close cooperation between the government, the NGOs and civil society is imperative.

Governmnet must go after big fishes in drug trades which connections across the borders as on now mostly police end up arresting only small dealers.

It is time Central governments should strengthen the the country dedicated entity the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) by drawing the by a band of committed officers, drawn from the different agencies like Income tax,Customs and the Police.
