Sir — Although the Blackberry smartphone, with its features that allow mobile access to messenger services and e-mail, has become an important and essential tool for corporate executives and even small businessmen in today’s fast-paced world, the tough stand taken by the Government of India in sending an ultimatum to its manufacturers , Research In Motion, is welcome and a step in the right direction.

As a sovereign nation, India’s security concerns must be met first by the Canadian company, if required, by setting up local servers for live monitoring facilities. It must be remembered that Blackberry has fully met security requirements in countries like the US, China, Saudi Arabia and UAE for fear of a ban on its services.

This is regarding the news item, ‘Ball is in your court, govt tells blackberry’.Though blackberry with all its important features has become an essential tool for corporate in the country, the Center hasn't changed its stand. The government toughening its stand and conveying that any proposal of BlackBerry maker Research In Motion (RIM) would be accepted only after security agencies are satisfied with the technology of interception is a step in the right direction.

At a time when technology is posing huge security threats, there is nothing wrong with the Center demanding that the country's security concerns be met. When RIM can comply with the rules in countries like USA, why not in India?
