Port Said tragedy
Arab News-4th Feb 2012-LE

The violence that erupted at a playground in Port Said, Egypt is most disheartening and deeply saddening. The violence claimed 74 lives besides injuring 1,000 spectators. There were clashes between supporters of rival teams when Al Masry defeated Al Ahly, one of the top clubs from Cairo by 3-1. This led to a stampede with the disastrous results we all saw.

This was the biggest disaster in Egypt's soccer history but during the last two decades violence has been increasing significantly at football matches across the world, especially in Africa. This was deadliest soccer disaster after the 1996 football matches in Guatemala City when 80 people were killed and several injured during a stampede before World Cup qualifying match between Guatemala and Costa Rica.

In such major sports events like football which have a history of violence there has to be a strong presence of security forces so that if violence breaks out it can be controlled.

Also there has to be large numbers of ambulances and paramedical teams to immediately give medical relief and move seriously injured persons to hospitals in shortest possible time.

The arrest of three cricketers over spot-fixing allegations in the Indian Premier League (IPL) brought the game of cricket — better known as gentleman’s game — into utter disrepute and the reputation of Indian cricket was dragged through the mud.

The love for cricket in the Indian subcontinent is so intense that whenever there is a match, people from all walks of life are glued to their TV sets to know the latest score. Cricket is a very popular game in the subcontinent and many youngsters consider these international players as their role models. The notorious act has betrayed a billion fans and it is a clear case of cheating the spectators who pay hefty entrance fees to watch a fair game. This is an unpardonable act on part of the cricketers who are involved in match-fixing or spot-fixing. These cricketers are already making fortunes.

The game of cricket is losing its glory because of match-fixing and other corruption charges. It has, in fact, become a commercial enterprise. I request the authorities to please bring back the glory to this game by taking some exemplary action against all those involved in spot-fixing. Police should also expand their scope of investigation across India and abroad.

The International Cricket Council also should set strict rules to penalize all those who indulge in match-fixing. There should be zero tolerance for corruption in the gentleman’s game.

Match fixing is disturbing-L.E
The Pioneer-,17 November 2014

Sir, This is regarding the sting operation carried out by a TV channel about corruption in the IPL and other domestic matches in which players are confessing about matches being fixed. Though this has embroiled the game of cricket, it has not come as a surprise. There was also a big uproar in the Lok Sabha during zero hour when Kirti Azad, a formidable cricket player of fester year, raised this issue in the House. Members sought a high level inquiry into the match-fixing and the role of our black money. This is not the feedback first time that cricket players of India and Pakistan have found themselves in the thick of a controversy.

Whether it is match-fixing or spot-fixing it brings disgrace to the game known as a gentleman’s always game. It is now commercial business run to geometrical money through match fixing What the Indian cricket players have done is an Unpardonable act. The Government of India should set up a team to Investigate cases of match-fixing and reach the bottom of these murky deals.

All those found guilty should be tried by a fast track court and punishment should be awarded to them.
