DNA India 8 September 2011-L.E.

The arrest of Amar Singh has come late, but at least the law has caught up with him. The nearly-forgotten cash-for-vote issue was brought to the fore by Wikileaks and the intervention by the judiciary that pulled up the Delhi Police for its tardiness. It is a pity that the judiciary has to step in to ensure the executive and the legislature function as mandated.

But a government managing to stay in power by defeating a no-trust motion by giving bribes is a devastating blow to democracy.

SIR ~ A housing scheme in Mumbai’s Colaba area, meant for the families of those who were killed in the Kargil war, has reportedly been allotted to politicians, bureaucrats and generals. This is disgraceful. Even the market price has been manipulated. The government seems to have forgotten the contribution of those who sacrificed their lives in the face of the severest odds and for the sake of our freedom and integrity. The war was fought in the snowy and rugged mountains.

The media deserves to be congratulated for having exposed the scam. It has had an immediate impact with the Maharashtra chief minister’s job almost on the line. Hopefully, the media will follow up such scams. Otherwise, they may get buried by the powers that be. The Prime Minister must be bold enough to order stringent action. Increasingly is public life becoming decadent.

DNA India 25 January 2012-L.E.

The multi-crore rupee scam in National Rural Health Mission (NRHM ) is getting murkier with every passing day, With unnatural death of project manager Sunil Verma, it has become apparent that all the senior officials associated With the NRHM are being found dead under mysterious circumstances. It is worrisome the actual or potential witnesses are being eliminated in all corruption Cases whereas the backstage manipulators, who are major beneficiaries of the scams, roam free.

The report of the apex auditor, CAG, strongly indicates that middlemen and contractor have misappropriated 25,700 crore from the NRHM fund. The best way to handle the case will be that the Supreme Court or a special investigation team monitors it.

Singh's transfer message to honest officers that if carry out investigation fairlyand book powerful, you will be transferred to obscure place.Singh was part of team that investigated Adarsh society scam, he also played a key role in booking Sarbjit Singh ,son of former home minister Buta Singh for allegedly accepting a one crore bribe.

By transferring a honest police officer like Singh, Governmnet has proved it is not serious in curbing cases of corruption in which high profile politicians are involved.

Khaleej times--2 November 2010--LE

Congratulations to Khaleej Times for publishing the excellent piece ‘Some strike rich many land in ditch’. It was most painful to know that housing meant to be given to families of martyrs of Kargil war, who laid down their lives for country, have been allotted to politicians, army generals and senior bureaucrats that too at 10 per cent of market prices.

These young men in their 20s sacrificed their lives for the sake of our freedom and integrity. They fought with all odds bravely, facing heavy artillery and chilly winds in the hostile terrain and rugged mountains at 17,000 feet above sea level.

In national interest, the media should highlight such issues. Corruption has reached great heights bringing disgrace to the nation’s character.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh should act against this issue with full boldness. Such decadence in public life should not be tolerated.

FIGHT CORRUPTION
Khaleej Times--LE--8 April 2011-L.E.

In India regulating authorities are neither fully independent nor do they have the power of independent investigations or prosecution. This has led to a very low level of accountability in the country.

Though the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is a very efficient organisation, it is the government say that still prevails. Hence there is an urgent need for setting up of Jan Lokpal Act which should act as an independent anti-corruption watchdog. A statuary body headed by an eminent jurist like Rtd Supreme Court Justice Santosh Hedge who is anyway retiring as Karnataka Lokayukta in August 2011 should comprise of independent minded people of very high and unquestionable integrity drawn from IPS,IAS,IRS banks, legal framework and one or two noted eminent public figure to carry forward Anna’s Hzare’s crusade against corruption.

Today, Anna Hazare has the whole country’s support in his fight against corruption and common men are joining his movement.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is a honest person hence his government should consider and accept Anna Hazare’s demands which are in the national interest to contain corruption in high offices and to have a free and transparent India. Unprecedented corruption needs unprecedented measures.

Governor H.R. Bhardwaj has rightly expressed his disappointment over the arrest of Medical Council of India chief Ketan Desai for accepting bribe of Rs 2 crore. This is just the tip of the iceberg. Trading l medical colleges has been going on for at least a decade after private medical colleges were granted permission to set up shop in the country.

The MCI scam has more severe ramifications than the IPL controversy. Corruption in a body like the MCI is highly deplorable and e this will ultimately affect the health and safety of the common man. The government should scrap this body and appoint people of high integrity to the MCI.
